Trophy Hunter Sportfishing Charters Winter Fishing![]() The winter fishery off the coast of North Carolina constantly changes but a few things remain the same. Historically the most consistent action would be yellowfin tuna fishing. The warm gulf stream follows our coast during the coldest months and produces incredible action. The most important key to this action is water temperature. As the Labrador current cools down most of the resident tuna that winter off our coast are congregated in the warmer gulf stream. The second factor would be reduced fishing pressure. When congregated tuna are combined with reduced fishing pressure the result can be fast action and limits of yellowfin. The newest and fastest growing fishery during the winter months has been the stripers. Each year there seems to be more and they seem to stay around a little longer. The season runs from Thanksgiving through early March. Limits of stripers weighing 15 pounds to 30 pounds are common. ![]() The main concern for most anglers during the winter months is the weather. There is good reason for this with the numerous storms and cold fronts along the coast of the Outer Banks. However, we do get mild and pleasant weather through out the winter depending on the timing. Trophy Hunter Charters recognizes the effort and planning required by each group for a trip. In most cases we have a good idea of the weather a few days in advance and can save a wasted trip down by the charter. The new Trophy Hunter will be bigger for a more comfortable ride on rough days and heated for the cooler days Trophy Hunter Fishing Charters |
